The wraps have been taken off the BMW 2 Series Convertible, which has been launched as a replacement for the outgoing 1 Series Convertible.

The sporty small drop-top features an electric fabric soft top that is capable of opening or retracting in 20 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h, and BMW claims drivers will enjoy a sportier drive thanks to a 20 per cent increase in torsional rigidity in comparison to the outgoing 1 Series Convertible.

BMW says the exterior of the 2 Series Convertible was designed independently and in parallel with the BMW 2 Series Coupe, giving it a unique cut and finish.

The BMW 2 Series Convertible is 72mm longer the 1 Series Convertible it replaces. Width and wheelbase have also increased by some 26mm and 30mm respectively. The increase in dimensions gives rear seat passengers more room and ups luggage capacity by 30 liters to 335L with the roof closed, and by 20L to 280L with the roof open.

Technology and features mimic the recently launched 2 Series, with the 2 Series Convertible debuting with the availability of iDrive, satellite navigation and over-the-air updates with in-SIM technology. Safety is also expected to mimic the 2 Series, which was recently awarded a five star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Under the bonnet, the 2 Series Convertible launches with the availability of one diesel and three petrol variants. The 220d boasts a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 140kW of power and 400Nm of torque and consumes a claimed average of 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers.

Two four-cylinder petrol variants include the 220i and 228i. They are both powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines, with the 220i producing 135kW of power and 270Nm of torque. The 228i produces more power thanks to increased turbocharger pressure, with 180kW and 350Nm. The 220i and 228i consume a claimed 6.5L and 6.6L/100km respectively.

As is the case with Coupe, the most powerful 2 Series Convertible offering is the M235i. The 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine churns out 240kW and 450Nm of torque. That engine manages the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.0-seconds, consuming a claimed average of 7.9L/100km.

All four engine variants are available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2 Series Convertible will be shown at the Detroit auto show in early 2015, and around the same time it is likely that Australian pricing and specifications will be revealed.

The 1 Series Convertible almost matched 1 Series sales with 130,000 sales, making it one of the most popular models in the BMW range (the hatch accounted for more than 150,000 sales).

UPDATE: BMW Australia general manager of corporate communications Lenore Fletcher told us this morning that the 2 Series convertible will arrive on our shores in the first half of 2015.
